Carbon Canvas — Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Carbon Canvas is built privacy-first. This policy explains, in plain terms, what data the extension handles and what it never touches.

The short version

We estimate the environmental footprint of your AI usage using metadata only. We never read, store, or transmit the content of your prompts, responses, or files. By default, everything stays on your device.

What we collect

To produce environmental estimates, the extension collects usage metadata when you visit a supported AI platform (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot):

We treat this as web history (which supported AI sites you visit, and when) and user activity (interaction counts used to derive session metadata).

What we never collect

Where your data lives

By default, all data stays locally on your device using your browser’s storage. It is not sent to us or anyone else.

If you choose to enable optional cloud sync, your metadata (never your content) is stored on our secure backend so you can access your dashboard across devices. Cloud sync is off by default and fully under your control. You can disable it and keep everything local at any time.

What we don’t do

Your controls

Data retention

Local data remains until you delete it or remove the extension. If you use cloud sync, synced metadata is retained until you delete it or close your account.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the date above and, for material changes, notify users through the extension.

Carbon Canvas collects only the metadata required to estimate environmental impact. Your conversations are yours. We never read them.
