Carbon Canvas — Privacy Policy

What we collect

To produce environmental estimates, the extension collects usage metadata when you visit a supported AI platform (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot):

• The number of prompts and responses in a session
• Estimated token counts
• Session duration and timestamps
• The platform and model in use

We treat this as web history (which supported AI sites you visit, and when) and user activity (interaction counts used to derive session metadata).

What we never collect

• The text of your prompts, responses, or conversations
• Uploaded files, images, or documents
• Your name, email, address, or any personal identifier
• Passwords or authentication details
• Financial or payment information
• Health information
• Precise location or GPS data

Where your data lives

By default, all data stays locally on your device using your browser’s storage. It is not sent to us or anyone else.

If you choose to enable optional cloud sync, your metadata (never your content) is stored on our secure backend so you can access your dashboard across devices. Cloud sync is off by default and fully under your control. You can disable it and keep everything local at any time.

Website forms

The extension does not collect your identity. If you separately submit the waitlist, higher-education pilot, or company pilot form, we collect the contact details and institutional information you choose to provide so we can respond to that request. Form submissions are not combined with local extension activity.

Institutional pilots

Any higher-education or company pilot will be voluntary and documented before participation begins. Participants will receive a clear description of the metadata involved, where it is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how to leave the pilot.

Participating institutions and companies will never receive prompts, responses, files, or conversation content from Carbon Canvas. Any aggregate reporting design and privacy thresholds will be agreed during institutional review rather than assumed in advance.

What we don’t do

• We do not sell or transfer your data to third parties.
• We do not use your data for any purpose unrelated to estimating your AI footprint.
• We do not use your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
• We do not show ads or use advertising trackers.

Your controls

• Keep all data local by leaving cloud sync off.
• Export your data as CSV or PDF at any time.
• Delete your local data from the extension settings.
• If you use cloud sync, request deletion of your synced data by contacting us.

Data retention

Local data remains until you delete it or remove the extension. If you use cloud sync, synced metadata is retained until you delete it or close your account.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the date above and, for material changes, notify users through the extension.
